“He was moving from an unreality that was frightening into a reality that was unreal because it was new.”
-Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451
Living with OCD can be frightening. Stuck in a cycle of doubt, fear, and compulsions, OCD sufferers cross a bridge into a life based on a scary story about what might be possible or who they might be. While OCD promises relief through the completion of compulsions, the reality is that compulsions draw the sufferer into an “OCD bubble”: a world where the imagination reigns and one’s five senses, common sense, and relevant information are discarded.
I treat OCD with Inference-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, treatment that targets OCD “upstream” of compulsions and seeks to resolve the doubt that leads a person to compulsions in the first place. I am comfortable supporting clients with all OCD subtypes as well with comorbid trauma.
